Girlfriend was complaining about her laptop getting hot so I said I'd take a look.
Running prime just to test and it's hitting 80 max. I don't use laptops so thought I'd see what you think. Is this too high? Should I crack open the case and clean the fans? Anything go terriblely wrong if I do this? Never been in a laptop either.

Sounds fine to me.

When she says getting hot - does she mean externally to touch? Is she sitting with it on her knees and maybe blocking the vents that way? In general getting the heat out is the aim so the outside getting hot isn't a huge concern but if it's getting excessively hot then it might be worth investigating further.

Opening up laptops generally isn't too hard but it varies a lot with make & model, try and find a youtube vid or something first to warn you about any easily breakable clips or anything.

Running prime is not a good test for a laptop because you hardly stress a laptop in normal use like you would with prime.

In normal use, ie browsing the internet if it is getting more than 70c then something is wrong.

Shine a torch in the vents to see if you can see a build up of dust. However make sure she is not doing something silly like use it on a carpet or on her knee. The amount of people I see using a laptop on their knee or on a cushion is unbelievable.

"I do it because it keeps my knees nice and warm..."

Yeah right...
