Hey guys, I have just registered as I heard this forum is the best place for computer related answers. I have a problem with my laptop which I bought as refurbished in November but with only 3 months warranty. The last week I have been having the screen flash up randomly with all different colours and then all of a sudden go normal. Now I thought it might have been the inverter but the backlight is completely fine so I am really unsure as to what it could be. It can be random too, in the sense that I could be on the laptop for a few seconds for it to start or an hour, but it usually happens every few minutes for a few seconds and it really annoying.
My laptop is an Asus R900V 18.4 inch and getting parts for this may not be easy. Here are a few pictures I took showing the problem and 1 showing it normal. The colours are completely random, on these 2 screenshots they are blue but normally it could be anything.

Any advice on what I need would be great, but replacing my screen would cost a whopping 300 pound.

What I can tell from this post is that you've completely ruled out that it's a software-related problem? I'm assuming you've tried the usual Display Driver Uninstaller and re-installing the correct graphics drivers? Maybe even re-installing Windows?

Does the problem occur when you're moving the laptop around or also when it's sat completely still, untouched?

Well it does this as soon as the laptop is turned on too sometimes so can it still be software? The problem is completely random but does sometimes do it as soon as I hit the power button to turn it on. The fact it can be perfect 1 minute and then do that the next is baffling to me, if the problem only happened in windows I would think software could be the problem, but with boot up too which I should have mentioned I am not so sure. I haven't tried DDU or reinstalling windows actually but do you think it could help even though it happens outside of windows? And what I have tried is the onboard graphics as well as the built in gpu and both do it.
The problem occurs sat and when moving around, sorry I should have given more information in my opening post.

Hmm, the fact that it happens randomly, even when the laptop isn't being touched makes me suspect that it's not the screen or a broken cable/bad contact anywhere inside the laptop.

But the fact that it happens straight upon boot before it goes into the bios tells me that it likely isn't software either.

What graphics chip is in there?

Yeah and its been on 40 minutes here and not done it so its really odd. there is a crappy gt635 and onboard hd 4000. I am using onboard now but both do the same. It was bought for college and is a good laptop just not for gaming.

Ok just started doing it argh

Okay, if it does it on both iGPU and GT635 then we can rule out something is broken there. If it does it before the system loads into Windows we can rule out a bad OS install and video drivers.

The fact it does it when no one is touching it makes me believe that we're not looking at a dodgy cable or contact here either, which leaves us, again with the actual panel of the laptop :(

I have had a look and cant see my screen under 300 anywhere. Its a 18.4 inch panel, its nowhere online in the uk that i can find the only place I can see them is new outside the uk. The only thing ebay has from my model is keyboards and a few small bits, no screens. Which ever you had seen on ebay it's not the same model I am certain. I expected under 100 quid too but I just can't find a good price for these ones. I am searching specifically for Asus R900VJ YZ145H screen on ebay and it brings up no screens, should I be searching something different?

I have just setup my trust so please anyone if you could email me the link if you find this, I am going mad
Just found the screen I think you mean its 58 pound 2nd hand and its not the same model as mine so I wouldn't think it would work.
Theres also another on there for 307 quid that is R900V, my model is R900VJ so not sure if it would be the same?

Ok rich you have got me looking at this one now http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BN-REPLAC...327623?hash=item2a5157b007:g:z0YAAOSwrklVX0~V I take it that is the one you were talking about. Does anyone know if that would be compatible with my R900VJ model? I have emailed to ask them but no answer as yet, hope it is its all I can find.

Actually I just took my laptop apart completely to get the part number from the screen, when I put it all back together the laptop had stopped doing it.. now the only cable that could have been lose and causing it would have been the webcam cable at the top of the screen which wasn't in properly, could it have been that simple?

id think it would be the motherboard to screen cable. when they're faulty they show similar things to yours. wiggle the screen back and forth and/or open the laptop up and prod the cable and connectors with a plastic pen tube or something to see if the image corrupts more/less as you touch it.
