Hi everyone, bit of a problem with my girlfriends laptop.
She came to use it the other day, and i've had a look at it and what happens is......when you turn it on its beeps like usual in the post and goes to load windows, but you get the windows not shutdown properly screen, possible software/hardware change or fault select how to load windows (eg safe mode, normal, last good config etc)
i have tried every option and it tries to load windows but it restarts as soon as the bar has finished scrolling across under the windows xp logo with the black screen....a blue screen does pop up quickly with an error message but it restarts so quickly i dont know what it says...
i did go into the bios and enable the virus protection in there before i came home and after doing that and restarting it displays a message of a virus, continue (Y/N), if i say Y the above happens again, if i say N a message on screen says MBR error and the pc freezes.

Any ideas? Will it be a complete reinstall or will flashing the bios do the job?

when its booting press f8, you should see a menu like the one u mentioned with safe mode and last known good config, one option should be disable auto restart on errors, once you know what is happening on the blue screen might be easier to work out the problem

But if your gettin a MBR error its probably that :p

There is a MBR repair function in the recovery console on ** xp cd

OK i will have a look tonight to see if i can find out the exact fault....but i will give my xp cd a try to see how if the repair option can do anything.

right well i tried using the fixmbr function, and it rewrote a new mbr and the restart still happened.....

i was able to read the fault and it says unmountable boot drive. so i tried using the chkdsk option, and it says the hdd is fine.

what can be wrong?

i left it running the chkdsk /r function overnight and when i restarted it once it was finished it still did the same problem of the blue screen......
i think i might have to do a reinstall of windows see what happens..

if i do that, is there any decent software that will recover formatted files? i obviously dont want to loose the important files (and no...no backups exist)
