I know that it should be in laptop forum but I it ussually takes a while to get an answer.
Basically when I close the lid on my hp then open again it stays on a black screen and i have to restart the laptop by holiding the power button down before I can use it again.
I have all settings to do nothing when I close lid etc so does anyone have any other ideas??

Well... the only thing i can recommend is that you have some setting turned on in Control Panel which allows it to sleep when lid is closed or something similar...

Also is there a little black rubber thing above your keyboard, if so, see if that is stuck in...

If all settings are indeed set to do nothing when you close the lid, it should turn off the backlight but nothing else. I also think this means the mechanism which detects whether it is open or not is jamming, it tends to be a sprung piece of plastic somewhere near the right hinge. It may or may not be visible.

The simple solution is to not shut your laptop, or to set it to shut down when closed.

Check the switch right between the LCD and the laptop board above the KB.
Make sure the switch is not stuck.

Also check with the power setting in the control panel.
Some PCs may have the problem resume and show screen from the standby mode if the power setting is not configured probably. Some Bios may have the feature like that as well.

Hope this helps!

If you can see and push the lid sensor the others are mentioning, try holding it in when the laptop is open. If it goes to sleep, you'll know you missed a setting somewhere.

Since its a laptop, you may have some bundled software on it? Maybe one of those is a power saving thing that utilises the lid sensor.
