Hi guys,

my girlfriend has a dell laptop and it has broken, when you turn it on in to comes up with a black screen saying missing pci drivers, and say enter windows recover concel using the windows cd and press are, i did this but it comes up in dos, or that comand promt screen and i have no clue what to do,

my option so far are to just reinstall windows and wipe it all, but then ever thing will be gone :(
i thought my be i could use a linux live cd to just copy it all on to a memory stick any one know which one to use, as i have never used linux

or could anyone explain how to use the windows recover part

one last thing it is windows xp home ed if that helps

Boot off the windows CD, go to install by pressing enter instead of R for recovery. At some point it will say their is a version of windows on this partition and when you have it highlighted it will say press R to repair this installation. Should fix it.

If you do end up reinstalling, you could use a linux live CD to recover the files or buy a USB caddy for a laptop HDD

Take the drive out and stick it in a laptop drive caddy so you can plug it in to another machine, get your data off, and then format it. That's if formatting is the route you want to go down.

Cripple.

I would get the latest, but people have reported that it 'killed' some of their laptop wireless cards, so I would go with the previous build (7.10 I believe?)

would you be able to give me a link to the cd pls, as there are quite a few i have know clue what i am looking for :)
