Quick question:

My Dad's laptop is a self build Compal IFL-90. Its adapter was broken so he got a universal one, also 90watt as was the original.

Now sometimes when it starts up it just shut off, just BAM off. Sometimes it switches to battery for no reason...

He knows nothing about computers and managed to start it up, he now thinks that it runs ok if he opens the DVD drive (LOL) and keeps it open :p I think he just got lucky...

My question, IF the PSU is not exactly the same specs as the original (watt/ampere/volt) can it be that because of this the computer shuts down?

It could be yes. It may also be that the polarity is round the opposite direction (though that normally means it doesn't work at all).

Try finding a closer matched PSU. What make was the original?
