is it a good idea to leave the battery in the laptop constantly?

Nope.

If your running the laptop off the mains, remove the battery. Mine only gets plugged in with the mains when I need to charge it up.

It doesnt make a difference, when you run off the mains the power doesnt constantly charge the battery, and lithium ions dont suffer from memory effect.

No, but lithium ion batteries don't like high temperatures and my laptop gets pretty warm when connected to the mains.

i read somewhere, it counts as a charge. Leaving a fully charged battery in a laptop while powering off the mains, does not do the battery any favours i think. It happened to my sister, she left it in there constantly while running of the mains and eventually the battery died and was not usable.

But the battery acts as a UPS, and lithium batteries have a finite lifespan anyway, I've left the battery in the laptop for a few years, lasts about 1 hour charge...but we've had several power failures in a year. The battery would probably be near end of life even left on the shelf anyway.
