Hi

a laptop that wont show up on the online scan by a well known site

(which threw me)

but identified the laptop had 3 slots (unusual ?) - one has 512mb rest empty

laptop is form 2007 and is running home vista

i'm remote from the laptop hence the confusion

q1) - is it bound to be ddr2 ?

q2) - if replace completely with 3 * 1 gig ddr2 and say machine only
recognises 2 gig normal will it stil work ? - so it will just ignore the excess ?

so in effect - is too much laptop memory a safe but wasteful option ?

bit vague but help will be appreciated

its an old evesham laptop who have now departed theis place for another place . . .

thanks

Run cpu-z, its a very small file but it'll tell you (or if need be us) everything one could possibly want to know about the ram, empty slots, and what the board will take.

It might be ddr2, but might not be. Equally the existing 512 might be soldered to the board. Don't put more ram in than the system can handle or it may fail to boot.

3 slots is unusual yeah, but if cpu-z agrees then I'll believe it

I just put 4gb in my gf laptop which only had 1gb running Vista and it's like a new laptop. You should be able to google the laptop model to find out for sure remotely. Or go to Crucial's site and use their online memory selector for the model of your laptop and they'll tell you the max of what you need and the speed of the ram then go buy it from ocuk.

hi

the crucial software doesnt like the laptop which threw me !

reconned it was mitac ?

its an old evesham so its a cloned taiwan job really

heard form someone that a 2007 laptop which it is might only be able to
access 2 gig so 2 * 1 gig seems a "safe" option

As the guys above said, download and install this program.

Then go to the "Memory" tab and take a screenshot of it. If you post that image here we will be happy to recommend some RAM that will work.

hi

ran cpu-z remotely using teamviewer (another tip form this forum so tx)

showed 2 slots

1st slot empty

2nd 512 ddr2 mbytes

pc2-5300 (333 mhz)

aeneon

so i think 2 * 1 gig would be safe - think 2 * 2 gig might not post

it reckons the evesham is really :-

mitac

notebook pc

vt6363a

in disguise

thanks to everybody for their help

p.s. - quick google on "mitac notebook pc vt6363a"

suggests it might handle 4 gig - ooohhh !!!!

its on a ram sellers site so i'll just post the text for obvious reasons :-

Go for 2 x 2gb. I found that 1gb are expensive for what they are and your save money over the equivalent cost of 4 x 1gb.

I also found that ocuk were by far the cheapest at £45 for 2 x 2gb.

If they don't work you can always return them under DSR and get 2 x 1gb instead.

The laptop boots quicker, is way more reponsive and games better with the 4gb in.

If I were you, get this stuff - pretty good value for money and should give you a solid performance boost compared to 512MB single channel.

If you think you would benefit from 4GB, get this (wherever you can find it in stock).

I got 2x 2GB for just shy of £40 elsewhere ;)

Corsair 2GB (2x1GB) - was thinking the same - seems a very cost efficient upgrade

thanks everyone for their help and advice
