My laptop currently has 256 ddr 333 ram, but it only has one slot for ram, so i was wondering is it possible to get a single 1gb stick of ram for a laptop which will run smoothly?

That sounds weird, most laptops I have seen always have 2 slots minimum 
You can get single 1Gb modules, if you shop around. I have seen them on the net, price range £50 - £90 depending on make and timmings all of them are PC3200

just look at the memory you already have, and make sure its either SDRAM, or DDR RAM, depending on the age of your lappy. All memery now-a-days will be DDR
