Upgrading my girlfriends laptop to windows 7 and going to put another 1gb of ram in it (has 1 x 1gb stick already)

using CPU-Z to see what spec of ram was in it, i found out that it was PC2-5300 but running at 533mhz @ 4-4-4-12 timings which is what PC2-4200 ram runs at.

Tad confused on what ram to buy then, 4200 or 5300

thanks
Grant

Depending on the FSB of the CPU, the ram will automatically clock itself down. So going by that info the laptop CPU has a FSB of 533mhz.

You can buy either type of ram, but if you buy slower ram and pair it with one that is faster, then the faster one will clock itself down to meet the slower one.

Double check that your lappy has 2 slots of ram as well. If it does have 2 slots I would try to get a 2gb stick for a total of 3gb.

its a HP g7000 and it has 2 Ram slots and as far as i'm aware can only support 2gb max!

think i will get the faster ram as that is obiviously what it has already, but it is being downclocked.
