Laptop Randomly not failing to boot

so my Nan's laptop has stopped working, its currently running Vista
its an old Dell Laptop, it never moves from her spare room. she only uses it once every 2 weeks Today she said she couldn't get on Facebook the other day.

This happens every so often, i setup chrome to auto-load Facebook/Gmail & sometimes it goes awol. i normally teamviewer in & set it up again.

however this time it wont boot & system event notification service fails to start
im hoping its just need to be setup to be automatic again.

core 2 duo 2ghz
4GB
500GB HDD

as she only uses Facebook & gmail,
do you think its worth going over to Linux for extra security & less hassle or going to W8.1?.?

dies on a Login Screen cant getr no further, hoping safe mode will fix it

first time i turned it on it worked perfectly



scan it for error it fixed a few
done sfc scan fixed stuff & done virsus scans and found 1 dodgy exe (not installed) thank god
