I'm looking for a laptop that will be able to play games like Battlefield 2142, although it doesn't have to be at a mega high resolution.. 1024x768 will do just fine.
I've got no idea what one to go for as there are so many different specs.
I'm assuming it'd be best to avoid the ones with the intel gma graphics etc and try aiming for an ati or nvidia derived graphics one.
I'm on a budget maybe max of £700 so if someone could recommend one that'd be great.
Cheers.

Check out the new Dell Inspiron 1520. You can specify it with a 8600GT, for under £700. It should play Battlefield fairly well.

Just ordered :-

Inspiron 1520

T7300 2.0GHZ 4mb cache
8600m GT 256mb ram
160gb hdd
2gb ram
15.4" Truelife screen
9 Cell Battery

Mine for £800

Canna argue with that!!

Also check out the Vostro lineup, same lappy but all black and no choices on lid colour, I just ordered one:

Vostro 1700
17" screen
C2d 7100 (1.8Ghz)
1GB RAM
8600GT 256MB
160GB HDD
Bluetooth and Draft N wireless

£675inc VAT and delivery

i'm looking into getting a laptop for around £650, i'm not sure to wait or to buy one sooner rather than later?

In the hope that the prices from dell drop a bit in the next 2-3 weeks

I was considering one of those vostro's, i prefer the all black a lot. Can you buy them even if you don't have a business ?

I've been offered a Vostro 1500 (possibly Inspiron 1520) with the following spec:

- 2.0GHZ T7300 with 4mb cache
- Vista Ultimate
- 15.4" UltraSharp™ Widescreen WSXGA+ (1680x1050) with TrueLife
- Built in 2.0 camera
- 2GB memory
- 160GB Harddrive
- 256MB 8600MGT
- 9 cell battery
- In built bluetooth
- Intel next gen wireless-N mini card

All for £893 in buy now pay August 2008. Which should be £979. With the 1440x900 screen it's £858. Is it worth paying the extra for the 1680 screen? Won't everything be a bit small on a 15" screen? Have until 5pm tomorrow to decide. :)

Definitely go with the bigger resolution screen!! Well worth it, you get more space to play with. And if you're doing anything like development work such as Dreamweaver or Photoshop and coding - you won't regret the bigger resolution. It won't look too small... unless you've had eye strain before? I personally prefer 1680x1050 on a 15" after experiencing 1440x900 - I still prefer more room to play with. :p

Thanks. I run 1680x1050 at work on our dell monitors and it is a nice area to work with, just figured the higher res would make things a bit small. I'm not going to be running games on it so do you think downgrading the card to the GS would be ok at that res with vista?

Hi Syphon - yea it should be alright as the GS does have 128mb of dedicated memory. But if you're thinking of anything remotely graphic intensive - then it's worth sticking with the GT as that's a pretty decent card for a mobile kit. But nonetheless - the GS would be fine with Vista, providing you get a decent discount with the downgrade.

Thanks for the advice. For the difference in price I suppose I might as well go for the GT then I'm more futureproofed. It will be doing some photoshop/ fireworks work, but little 3d.

The discounted deals run out tomorrow evening and the guy's knocking £100 off for me as I haggled a bit. I've looked at other manuf's and can't find comparible models to that spec for anything below £1200+, seems I should bite their hands off.

Has anyone got a laptop with a 1.66ghz Core 2 Duo in it with 1gig RAM? I'm curious as to how it performs in windows vista in regards to loading times of programs and the overall sharpness of vista.

Laptop was due this coming Tuesday. My order status is saying "pre-production", even though when I phoned yesterday I was told it was in production and it should still be with me on Tuesday.

Today I had an e-mail saying the expected delivery is now the 26th September! 2 months on from when I ordered it! I'm cancelling tomorrow morning. That's ridiculous.

Guys do you have to actually own a business in order to purchase the Vostro notebook? or can you still buy it as a consumer?

No you dont have to be a buisness to order one, they didnt question me when i bought mine and im just a normal consumer. :)

i'm amazed this thread is here. seems ocuk do not consider dell a competitor.

i thought you got nuked as soon as you mentioned another retailer. seems i was wrong.

Dell have failed miserably recently with their launch of new products and delivery schedule. I only recently got my XPS M1330 4 days ago on the 13th! After ordering on the 6th July. It's a shame.
