I'm looking for a laptop for my son, he studying media at college leading to university very soon.
What would be recommended for his needs, he mentioned macbook pro, any other alternative? budget around 500-600 but not really important.

Any model in particular for hp and dell ? so many to choose from.

Prepared to go over budget, if its mac then so be it, but is there any models that's equivalent to mac I should look out for?

I'd say with HP and Dell work out the screen size you want and how much you want to spend. Remember the business laptops are generally more sturdy than the home ones, though I have a Dell Studio 15 which has lasted almost 5 years without issues and it is a home device.

When you say equivalent models to Mac, what do you mean?

You're looking at over double your budget for a MacBook Pro pretty much, what sort of screen size are you looking at and does it have to be massively portable?

Hi,

We have seen a lot of customers buying the P34G and making good comparison to Mac experience.

Very powerful, very portable and although over the budget, this unit is £150 discounted at the moment (was £1,149)

Hope that helps on your quest.

13' - 15' would be the ideal size.

Check with your son if he'd very keen on going Mac, in which case you might need to spend a bit more. Basically, Macbook Pro is a very good computer but it's a fair bit pricier than a PC laptop of equivalent spec.

Dell laptops have been reliable for me. You could get a well specced Inspiron for your budget. Make sure you get enough RAM, 4GB is OK but 8GB much better for performance. There is a way to get a better spec Dell for less money, but not sure if I'm allowed to mention it here.

I've just ordered a Microsoft Surface Pro 3, arrives Mon. This should be a good computer although I got the £1,000 i5 / 8GB RAM model, you would get lower spec for your budget. It has the advantage of ultra portability and can be used as a tablet which I think is very useful. Later you can add a dock and external monitors, so can be used as a good desktop setup too.

Lenovo is also a good brand. Again, they do laptop/tablet convertibles, and these might be quite useful as very versatile. I ended up buying the SP3 over the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro because of cost, but they do cheaper laptops with touchscreen. Lenovo in general quite a decent brand.

If you Google "best laptop brands 2014" you'll get a better idea of the quality on offer.

Most laptops in that price range nowadays come with 4GB ram plus (the more the merrier here but anything over 8GB is uneccessary. All will come with HDD of 500GB plus, again this should be plenty but if you are worried abouts torage then look for one with 1TB Harddrive.

then look for an I5 CPU (best bang for book)

you will want 14" minimum screen size to be any good to be honest.

Brand wise I tend to steer clear of HP at anything below a business grade laptop.
Lenovo/Dell & Samsung are what I personally would be looking at.
