ive lost the recovery disk to install vista again on my mrs laptop, ive been on toshibas website and downloaded the sound, display drivers etc and will have to install vista from another source somehow.

Can i pay for another copy of the recovery disk ? as on toshibas website i cant find anything about replacement disks?

http://backupmedia.toshiba.eu
emter your la[top serial number. Disks costs £29
With toshibas laptops you have 2 options
1) the laptop will come with a disk -> if you lose it break it you have to go to that site for a replacement
2) Your laptop (99% of toshiba laptops sold) did not come with a disk. instead there is a tool in the startmenu called toshiba disk recovery creator which creates the disk. if you are unable to create them due to your computer not working then again you need to go to the above website.

Under no circumstance will toshiba technical support send you out the disc (and I do mean under no circumstance.) If you can nota ccess the website for whatever reason you can purchase it via their customer service team but they still and will always charge you the £29.
Don't bother to argue it won't get you anywhere

They will send out a CD as my mate got one from them in Feb. It was sent free too!

Sorry but, I am not going to argue the fact. i worked there for a year and a free cd was never sent out (out of literally thousands if not hundreds of thousands of cases). It is always a £29 charge and is always done through the website (even if you phone toshiba customer services they just do it via the website ) and it takes 14 working days to come normally although once i was aware it took almost three months and on that specific occasion they did refund the cost.

The laptop was bought just before christmas. My mate phoned them up and got sent out a proper recovery cd for his laptop, Free of charge and had it within 3 days!! They were very helpful indeed.

The discs sent are the discs u can see here http://backupmedia.toshiba.eu (as I already said there is a £29 charge for these). These are not windows installation discs but discs which have the factory prebuild image of windows + drivers + pre-installed software. The discs basically put the system back to exactly how it was when you first purchased it. So if it is 6 years old the discs will restore it to how it was 6 years ago.

Ok thanks, would be nice if they updated the software to take advantage of windows service packs etc.

But hey ho.

The reason they don't do that is due to costs unfortunately. Each prebuilt image is a known good working configuration if the discs will not run or problems occur straight after installing the discs then they know there is a hardware problem and they book it into repair.
So if they were to update the discs at all they would have to do full testing on each model and each models variant which would take a very long time and cost a lot of money. They have a lot of laptops both new and old and a lot of them are slightly different with a slightly different configuration

Ridiculous.

I know that the recovery disks are not vanilla Windows, but would it be possible to download a kosher Windows ISO and use the OEM key that came with the laptop?

Technically yes however retail windows is not the same as OEM windows. You would have to obtain a copy of OEM windows.

Have you tried the key method in the BIOS if you need to do a full restore? when my GF's mum toshiba laptop played up before I did a full system restore from the bios, reboot the laptop & when you see the Toshiba BIOS screen keep pressing F8 until a list of options appear, select repair your computer. This will format & restore the laptop to factory set up.
