I know there is a thread about coffe and pc's, but thought I should do my own instead of jumping in on someone elses.

Anyway to the point
(And no laughing)

2 weeks ago in the severe snow, I managed to slip, fall and smash our laptop in a movement that could get you through to the next round of dancing on ice.
My pride took a battering, and the laptop broke the fall.

Took the lappy to the local shop and they tell me it is beyond repair. Screen and mobo broken, let alone anything else (and if I wanted a letter for the insurance, I could for a small admin charge ( :p )

Any way we checked with our insurers (high street bank) who tell us it is covered.
They have appointed a company to deal with it, and they sent a courier to collect it today and told me that it would be assessed within 5 days, then they would get back to me regarding repair or replacement.

Now, I don't think they will fix it (it did rattle a lot)

What should I expect to get. This was the old spec laptop..

This is where you don't laugh (wife went shopping and the sales guy told her it was the bee's knees (tbh, it was not that bad)

Tiny laptop
Celeron D 2.4ghz
512 ddr 400mhz
40 gig hdd
On board gfx (shared 64mb I think)
15.4 screen
cdrw/dvd rom
win xp pro (sticker on bottom of case, but pre-installed)

Now we all know they went bust so I should not expect to see another one of them (unless they have a shed full of em!)
I do not want to get in the position where they say "right, you can have this this or that one" and I make the wrong choice.

What should I look for in a laptop. I don't have much to do with them so know nothing about them

Any help would be great..

And if you help, you can laugh at it ;)

Sorry to hear that, main thing is you didn't break yourself :)
See this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17693289 and expect similar nonsense, although you may be offered a direct off-the-shelf replacement (i.e. dell/HP, or a voucher for a high-street PC store).

5 days, sounds awfully familiar, does the appointed companies name start with a P? I was told 5 days, you have to ring them though, they're fairly useless at calling you :(

Good luck! :)

Sorry about the delay. Thanks for the response
I do believe it is the same play company. They were useless at calling. I rang my bank after 2 days on no contact and they gave them a rocket up the ... you know what. Funny, they rang me 7 minutes after me ringing the bank to arrange collection.
I thought it would be a replacement, but did not know you may get a voucher

What should I steer clear of in terms of makes features etc.. (I know that broken one was a tiny)

Well my expirance is realy good, with insurance company and getting my laptop replaced.
he is my sad tale of woe...........

one morning my wife was using my laptop a dell inspirion 9300 ( i paid jsut over £1.000) for it, anyhow wife was happily surfing internet, i had jsut made her a cup of coffee, can you see whats comming up, lol anyhow she was on the settee, and one of my kids descided to jump on the settee, hense to say all of the coffee went straight into the alptop, i mean it had swallowed the lot, greedy laptop, anyhow, after a lot of swearing beating various objects up, as it was about 6 months old!!!, i calmed down and phoned my insurance company, while talking to them, they was hmmming and arhing saying im not sure if your laptop is covered, my heart sunk, i then remembered i took out addition insurance for for this very reason, wich covers both my laptop and my computer, no you dont sorry sir they replied, i then argued with them for about another 30 mins, i then promptly put the phone down, as soon as i come of the phone i then remembered seeing the policy rescently and was positive it was on there, the extra cover i had got, then we franticly started to search my whole house,( i have to say im useless putting up recipts and policys) im not now btw, i have to say we totaly trashed our house to find, BINGO i shouted i found it and on the policy it did state the addition items i had requested, but the crunch was i had a exsess of like £100 since i have got a big screen tv and 4 computers ect, nps i thought i raced to the phone, retelephoned them back up, tell them what has happened, and gave them my policy number, they appologised and said yes you are correct,(apparently i had 2 policies) anyhow they siad i would have to fax copy of the recipt to prove i actualy owned the laptop, nps i siad, they siad once i had done that i would resieve a phone call form the company dealing with my claim, siad ok nps, put the phone down, it must have been about 1 hour late ri had a phone call hello we are balh blah (sorry cant rember the name of the company) we are dealing wiht your claim, i siad nps , they siad we will need to pick up your laptop and inspect it, i then said nps they told me to remove the hard drive from it wich i did, anyhow got off the phone, and started the waiting game i siad to my wife it woudl most proberly take 1-2 weeks for them to pick it up, how wrong i was, it was the next day courier picked it up it went off, 2 days later i had a phone call of the company to say they had resieved it, the tests they had to run took 3 days, i siad nps, but i added its a waste of time, as it wont even start up, coffee killed it, she siad ok and anyhow got off the phone from them. sure enough in 3 days time they telephoned me up and said, ad i quote them" how the hell did you manage to get that much coffee in the laptop" i then explained how it happened , they was very sympafetic, they siad, its been oficialy classed as dead, and then siad have you got time to run though what new laptop i want, obviously off dell site again, anyhow they then siad oh dear your laptop is no longer in production, so i would have to have the the iquivilent model, the brand new dual core 9400, of course i siad yes that will do, they ran through the spec with me asking if it was ok, i had to have a small hardrive a (60gb sata model) becuase i still had the original, not saying anything i let them continue, we got to the video card, i knew they was going to kick up a fuss, at the time i think i had a ati something or other in there, it was a 128mb card, and plaid games fiarly well, anyhow they siad the dreaded words, sorry you will have to have the onboard video card, i was stunned at the time when i bought my dell 9300 i brought the highest spec graphics card you could for a laptop, i then told them that, and told them that i needed a descent graphics card to be able to play games on it, the helpfull girl then went quite for a bit , ( must have gone to speak to a manager) anyhow she came back and siad yup thats fine we will get a nvidia geforve go 7900gs (256mb) installed, she then started to laugh and siad you do realise how much extra that is going to cost , i said no, she siad, its £500 plus jsut for the card, and since you got that card, you will have to have the upgraded screen wich at the time was another £300 it is a 17 inch widescreen ultra brite version, she then ran through the rest of the spec i was happy as hell, she then asked for payment, the exsess charge £100, at this point i was gutted i had only just got paid and woudlnt haveit now for a couple of weeks, they then replied nps, we will goahead and order your new(exspensive £2,000) laptop she was laughing, and said her manager wasnt happy about, but he agreed to it,, she siad the laptop would take up to 7 days to arive to me, wiht a big grin on my face siad nps and thnak you, in fact i said thank you about 30 times, was glad i hadnt lost my original investment,a nd also about the nice new laptop that was comming, she said, once you resieve the laptop i had to ring them up and confirm it is the spec that was ordered,a nd it was all ok, she gave me her telphone number and contact name to ring if i had any problems, iwas then saying thank you several more times, the laptop arived 4 days later direct from dell, it was jsut as they described the spec. i then rang them up as i promised to, and told them it was all fine, (repeatedly thank ing them again) they then asked when i could make the £100 exses fee, i told them my paydate, and had to give them my work details so they could confirm this, , anyhowi then range them up on payday to pay the £100, i was told, no need to pay it as the insurance company had paid it, i siad ar eyou sure, they then went of and checked, and replied yes its been paid, i then siad thank you blah blah blah, i got off the phone to them, a few days later i got a letter form my isurance company ending my policysomething about an isurance risk, and the fact they had been charged £2,500 for the laptop, and it was over the policy, anyhow, i jsut thrugged ,a nd was still thanking them anyhow, that i hadnt wasted my jsut over £1,000 lol, i then went onto dells website and checked, i dont know why i didnt think to check it before and sure enough i aded the same spec i had got, it came to something like £2,300, the only diff was i had xphome as aposed to ms media centre 2005, fealing well chuffed , i havent used it much since, lol proberly 15 times, in 6 months.
so anyhow thats my experiance, imnow wiht another insurance company now, although i had to pay a lot more becuase i had made a claim within 3 years, but still a happy customer

Thaks for that. It made me smile.
I shall keep this updated as soon as something happens

I still don't know what to beware of when it comes to laptops. I do not want to end up with a donkey ;)

Whens you gets your choices, post back on here and someone will point you in the right direction. Just don't make a snap decision when they ask you if you don't trust yourself :)

Hi,

Few weeks ago same happend to me (through water over my laptop) the company Direct Line use collected it about 2 weeks ago, phoned up a couple of time to get an update, the Laptop was beyond repair and the company sourced me a Dell latitude D620 checking the Dell website seems £80.00 more than I paid for my Dell 630m.

At the moment I can not complain about how things have gone.

So hopefuly this should arrive next week.

the best advice i can give you is this, write down the model number the system spec ect, pay attention to the cpu/amount of ram, lcd size ect grpahics card then when they offer you a make and moddle ect do a google for it, look for reviews of it
make sure you get - spec for your laptop dont let them offer you under par laptop, if they offer you a voucher ask where you will be able to spend the voucher if it is a certian blue shirted place, go to your nearest one take a look at it, dont listen to the idiots there, they dont know anything, make sure you say to the insurance people you will think about the offer they have made for you, dont say yes straight away, and like what was previously siad post the model ect on here there are plenty of us laptop owners here to advice you if your getting a good deal or not, i will help you for one if you like.
hope it helps

Hi,

In terms of manufacturers Dell, Toshiba, Acer, HP and IBM are all good in my opinion, they should be offering dual core processors and reasonable amount of RAM, like Data Vampire said post the offerings here for any advice.

Hope the above helps

Yeah thats the same company :) I've been speaking to a guy called 'Ollie' on the computer team as he seems to be the only guy there that gets back to you and is willing to help.
I've heard of some companies offering vouchers etc instead of a replacement, not sure about p-play, I'll ask that question if their next offering is still not up to scratch.
I think they have some sort of contract with Dell and Sony, as they sell their laptops, so you may be offered one of those? Just a wild guess really..

Best of luck hope it all works out well :)

As promised...................an update !!

The company dealing with my laptop rang to tell me that it has been assessed by their experts. In their opinion, it is beyond repair.

GREAT!!!!!
But then....

He told me he was unable to offer a range of replacements as their internet was down and so was the whole of Sussex (if you live there, let me know) and could not get on to the supplier web site to source models etc.
(I laughed too)
I asked could people still not talk over the phone. But this was something that was not done.
I have been asked to give them a couple of days until their internet is on again.
More news as it arrives ;)

Replacement found
