After a DOA Nvidia 540M and then one week after a replacement motherboard it goes again I've arranged a refund. So I'm after similar specs for similar money (may be difficult as it was from the outlet)

This is the original spec :

Processor: Intel Core i5-2430M (2.40 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.00 GHz)
English Genuine Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium (64Bit OS)
Graphics : 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M Graphics card
Display : 15.6" Full HD B+RGLED True-Life (1920x1080) with 2.0 Mega Pixel Integrated Camera
750 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
8 GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz (2 DIMMs)
Wireless: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 (1x2 b/g/n+ Bluetooth Combo Card)
Battery : Primary 9-cell 90W/HR LI-ION
8X DVD +/- RW DRIVE

The main things I'm looking for are :

i5 or i7 CPU (as long as its powerful enough not to bottleneck the GFX card)
Something equivalent or better than the Nvidia 540M
15" 1080p display

Drive doesn't matter as I will be putting in a Crucial M4 SSD
Not fussed about memory as that can easily be upgraded (as long as it supports 8GB+)
Wireless N support would be handy.

Looking to pay £600 or less.

Closest I've found so far is a Clevo Genesis IV :

Genesis IV: 15.6" Glossy Full HD LED 16:9 Widescreen (1920x1080) (£35)

8GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (2 x 4GB)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 630M - 1GB DDR3 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
250GB SERIAL ATA II 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (5,400rpm)
8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)
Internal 9 in 1 Card Reader (MMC/RSMMC/SD: Mini, XC & HC/MS: Pro & Duo)
Intel 2 Channel High Definition Audio + MIC/Headphone Jack
GIGABIT LAN & WIRELESS INTEL® N130 802.11N (150Mbps) + BLUETOOTH
2 x USB 3.0 PORTS + 1 x USB 2.0 PORT AS STANDARD
Genesis Series 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (48.84WH)
1 x UK Power Lead & 65W AC Adaptor
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit w/SP1 - inc DVD & Licence
INTEGRATED 1.3 MEGAPIXEL WEBCAM
Warranty
3 Year Silver Warranty (1 Year Collect & Return, 1 Year Parts, 3 Year Labour) (£5)

Price: £628.00 including VAT and delivery.

Anything else I could be looking at. Seems really difficult to find a good list of laptop specifications to compare. Thanks.

BeelzebubUK, I got a Inspiron 15R SE for a little less than you've listed there with a 10% voucher and Quidco cashback.

I have a review floating around this part of the forum if you want to have a look at it.

Thanks but I've ordered the Vostro now. Was that with a 1080p screen ?? I couldn't get the 15R SE for less than £700 (inc the 10% voucher) with a 1080p screen but that was only with a 1 year warranty and as I will be keeping this laptop for several years I really wanted 3 years especially after the failure of two XPS 15's. My last laptop was a Vostro and that really impressed me so hoping this one is just as good. Didn't really need the extra GPU power or the speakers in the SE.

I did but to get the same spec as the Vostro it would have been the same price if not a little more and would be slightly lower specced and with only 1 year warranty. I'd be paying for the slimness of it which I didn't need as it will spend most of its life on my desk.

Got it yesterday (2 day delivery) but installed my own SSD so spent all last night just getting Windows 7 on it and getting all the Dell drivers installed.

Going to run a few tests on it tonight. So far so good. Was going to put up a mini review of it when I get a chance.

Very interested to see a couple of pics and a review if you don't mind?

OK. Haven't had much time to play with the Vostro 3560 but as a couple of you were interested i'll jot down my initial thoughts and some performance figures.

I really like the simple elegant look of the laptop. Seems quite light and slim to me although my previous was a very bulky 17" Vostro 1700. But had it on my lap for a hour or so and wasn't uncomfortable at all.

The surface finish is really lovely. It has a rubberised coating around the keyboard/trackpad and the screen and also at the top of the screen on the back. So you get a bit of grip for typing and no fingerprints around the keyboard or when you pull the screen up/down.

The screen is excellent. No backlight bleed and colours look nice and vibrant. Its a matt finish as standard so shouldn't suffer from reflections. 1080p suits the 15.6" screen perfectly in my opinion.

Keyboard is a good size and has soft touch keys with decent spacing very similar to my logitech K750 and plenty of room to rest your palms for typing. Not sure if its standard but the backlight works very well so I'd say thats a must have. Touchpad is nice and big and supports 2 and 3 finger gestures (Not actually sure what 3 fingers do phnarr phnarrr)

Something that niggled me about the XPS was that the HD led was on the back so you couldn't see it with the screen up which seemed daft. Thankfully the LEDs for Power/HD/Battery & Wifi are on the front.

It has plenty of connectors. 4x USB3.0 with one on the lefthand side marked as powered (I'm assuming that means it supplies more than the standard spec for iPODs etc ?). HDMI, VGA, Gigabit network, headphone & microphone jacks. My only gripe about these is that there are no connectors on the back which makes it a little untidy and a bit awkward when for example using a mouse as the cable can get in the way. Not a big issue but would have liked at least the power/network and 1-2 USB ports on the back. It also has a fingerprint reader which appears to do what it says on the tin.

Speakers are adequate. Theres no subwoofer so don't expect this to sound good in games or for playing music. Either use headphones or get some external ones. The XPS speakers + subwoofer were very impressive in comparison.

Not sure on battery life. Looks like it will last about 3.5 hours just doing normal desktop stuff.

The original 500GB hard drive supplied was a Western Digital Scorpio Black so not a bad drive really. I expected something more mundane. Although I still swapped it out for a Crucial M4. One thing to note was that the service cover underneath was very difficult to get off. Felt like I was almost going to snap it trying to get the plastic lugs to pop.

Performance

Couldn't tell you what the original build is like as I swapped the HD for a Crucial M4 SSD and reinstalled Winows 7 Pro from the supplied disc. Got all the necessary drivers from the Dell website and had no problems getting everything working. Bit disappointed that I couldn't use the latest ATI drivers but I believe there are ways around this which I still have to investigate. - Edit : Have now installed Catalyst 12.7 Beta drivers

3DMark11 basic gives :

Overall : P1230
Graphics : 1108
Physics : 3717
Combined : 1049

I did run Unigine Heaven 3.0 at 1920x1080 with 4x AA as per the benchmark thread in the GFX forum and it was limping along at about 8FPS :)

Windows Experience Index gives :

Processor : 7.1
Memory : 7.5
Graphics : 6.4
Gaming Grpahics : 6.5
Hard Disk : 7.9 (Crucial M4 so no surprise)

I ran Dungeons & Dragons Online which due to being an old engine runs very well even at some of the highest settings.

I also tried out Battlefield 3 and running at 1080p was getting averages of about 23FPS on Low and about 18FPS on Medium settings.

If you set it down to 1366x768 that goes up to about 33FPS on low and 26FPS on Medium so just about playable.

During benchmarking and playing games the fan does come on but its not too loud or whiny. The CPU and ATI card were both in the low 70's temperature

To summarise.

Pros :

Nice subtle looking.
Rubberised coating a great idea.
Screen is excellent.
Enough power to play most games at decent settings.
Quiet fan
Comfortable on a lap

Cons :

No ports on the back.
Speakers aren't great.
Service cover very difficult to get off.

No but I don't mind trying it out. Will update later.

Any particular settings I should use ?

Don't want you to ruin your install, however if you can see how far it will go and still keep 40-50 fps i'd be grateful :)

Awesome review by the way, i'm fed up of a glossy screen so matte as standard is a bonus.

Installed it last night. just need to get a trial account sorted tonight. Don't mind putting it on as I remember trialling it a couple of years ago and it looked stunning but seemed too much of a grind for me considering its subscription based (unless you play it like a fulltime job). Shame they haven't got a true free 2 play model for it by now.

Edit : Found the commands for displaying FPS : ctrl+f or ctrl+alt+shift+m

Looks like Eve was possibly the worst game you could have chosen :)

There seems to be an issue with it not using the switchable graphics (several threads on their forums as well). The graphics options only show the Intel HD4000 and the ATI manager doesn't popup to give the option to set the 7670M as the preferred GFX either.

Despite that I ran it anyway and zipping around space stations and warpgates I was getting about 40+ FPS with the settings either at low or medium. If I set it to the performance profile it was running almost constant 60FPS. It did cause the laptop to really heat up though I'm guessing because the HD4000 is struggling to keep up ?

Also if you're running it fullscreen and quit the desktop turns psychedelic. You have to make sure its in windowed mode before quitting to get around it.

wow, thanks for the update. I believe the switchable graphics is a known issue, however it is using the AMD card even though it shows it isn't.

I run on windowed mode anyway but its still rather worrying it does that. Thanks very much for testing. Much appreciated!!!
