Laptop RMA Question?

Hi everyone :),

My friend gave me his laptop to look at. Various problems with it, one which included a BSOD. I had it originally put it down to software as there were other software issues. However to cut a long story short... The backup partition wouldn't allow a reinstall of the OS (Samsung Recovery)

To cut a long story short, I narrowed it down to a faulty RAM module, it failed memtest drastically. (hundreds of errors within seconds of running) I have now removed the faulty module, fully reinstalled the operating system.

Now my question is, will the online retailer whom he bought it from allow just for a swap of modules, as it is only a few months old and still covered under warranty, or would they need the whole unit to be shipped back... this of course would incovenient, as I have spent a little while getting rid of all the bloatware and reinstalling from fresh. Also he would probably be without his laptop for a couple of weeks.

The laptop in question is a Samsung R580, the 2GB module was the faulty one, 1GB is fine.

Depends where it come from. Most of the big box retailers won't be happy and will exclaim that even opening the panel for the RAM invalidates the warranty.
If it come from a specialist computer retailer then there is more chance they'll send out another stick of ram if you sweet talk them on the phone, perhaps telling them you know it's the RAM as you yanked out the dud stick and it's now fine :)

I've always been led to beleive that RAM upgrades were acceptable under the warrantys. I will see what they have to say about it on the phone.

Which is why I said most of the big box retailers won't be happy and will exclaim that even opening the panel invalidates the warranty!
I can't see any reason why it would invalidate your warranty, the panels are never security sealed, and some laptops even provide instructions, but most of the staff in big box places are clueless!

That's because it doesn't!

Replacing ram on any laptop will never void a warranty. They may be clueless but everyone has rules to follow... they weren't a "big box retailer"

Thank's for the abuse/advice
