Laptop screen flickering and hissing

OK, so it is 7 years old and has served me very well but is this the beginning of the end? I have no intention of getting it fixed as I'll just use an external monitor for now but I'm curious as to what the fault is.

LCD inverter whine. Traditionally housed on a little pcb at the bottom centre of the screen.
And yeah, about to die, but could whine for months yet!

I had a thinkpad that made a hissing kind of noise and it was a dry joint on the ccfl tube that was arcing.

Stipped the lcd down and redid the joint and it was fine.
