The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400 running Windows Vista. The screen brightness keeps adjusting itself and there's nothing you can do to sort it out (e.g.adjusting the brightness settings). At times it will go pitch black (i.e. the colour of your television screen if its turned off), and sometimes its slightly lighter (but still really really dark). Then it may be fine again for a week or so, and then the problem comes back.
Any idea's what might cause this problem and if there are any solutions?

Any way to fix the backlight or a dodgy connection? Unfortunately its out of its warranty. Only by about a month as well!!
