The girlfriends laptop screen seems to have broken, the laptop is on, but the screen is still black, as if it was switched off. it sometimes flickers for a bit, an sometimes you can see the image very faintly.

i thought it may be a faulty connection somwhere? its only a year old, but was a refurb when i bought it

Are these thing I can fix myself? Also could it be caused by being plugged into the mains too often?

Thanks for the replies guys

yes should be no problem to fix, providing you get the right parts, but knowing which is at fault is the tricky part, i would go inverter 1st , then harness, then lcd if none of those work. Plugging has no effect, its just one of the common things that fail on a laptop.

Right, it seems to be working fine after giving it a clout, so that rules out the backlight and the lcd being faulty.

what does a harness and an inverter do in this context? And how much are they generally? Its a Compaq Presario V6000 if that means anything

on this model the cable that plugs into the left side of the inverter often pops out, if you undo the 4-6 screws that hold the lcd bezel on they're under the rubber bungs, and gently ease the bezel off pulling it towards you and unclipping at the sides, this should reveal the inverter, a small pcb below the lcd and the left side cable just needs pushing home a few mm and securing with electrical tape. job done!
