Hey guys,
My flatmates HP laptop screen has stopped working for some reason or another. He has connected an external monitor to the laptop to show that it is the screen that is the problem.
I know this is a bit vague but does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it with out having to send it to some company who will probably charge 300 quid for doign very little..

Cheers!

there's a connector on the back of the lcd itself and the mainboard you can try reseating these but if you have no knowledge of taking them apart you could cause more damage, if that doesnt work its probably the lcd that needs replacing or the cable as they can break were they go through the hinge. you can get lcd panels resonably cheap on some auctions

I'd check the screen cable first.

Try pressing down on the case on the main body of the laptop just beneath and around the hinges - commonly the screen cable connection will fit in there. If it's become loose, pressure on there may seat it enough to give some visible feedback on the screen. While this won't fix your problem, it'll let you know what the problem may be before you strip the unit.

EDIT - I doubt it'll be the panel though, I'd expect either the backlight or the display to go, and not both.

rolta.co.uk, I use a bloke on there for work screens, the last 15" hp screen (was a samsung model iirc) wa 150 quid, fitting yourself is easy as long as you take your time and dont force the plastics.

Funnily enough I have a Fujitsu Siemens that does this ever so often. The fix for me is to shut the lid and open it a few times. I don't know why it does this, I have had the laptop apart to see if there are loose connections, but there aren't. Its baffled me, but the last time it did it was in July.
