Laptop Screen problem

Have this issue with a laptop screen on an acer. It seems to boot up, but the screen is wierd, it doesn't give me a picture, you can see the screen comes on, but barely, you see fine lines, it "lights up" but with dark lines in some places, vertical. This laptops OS isn't necessarily good either, so if I plugged a monitor in, it might not get a picture until it gets to the desktop, right? In which case, I still wouldn't be able to rule out the screen, unless you can give me an idea after what I've just said.

Sounds to me as if it's the laptop screen that is broken. If you say that the screen is very dim, then it is probably the backlight that has gone. As you say, try plugging in an external monitor to make sure.
