ok, my brother came home from uni and i have noticed that his screen is way too dim when running off battery, once plugged into the mains it's way brighter, is this broken then?

he got it last december, i went to the website and this is the info i got about from the serial no.

Warranty information for your product

Product: AMILO L1310G 60GB BTU05 /BU L1310G -UK-/
Warranty performance: 1 Jahr Collect & Return Service

i assume that means it only had a 1 year warranty? what can i do?

Most laptops have a number of profiles you can set up so the machine will alter settings depending on the power source.

If you have a battery icon in the system tray try right clicking on it and see what options you have.

Entirely normal, as Richiev4 suggests you can try altering the profiles or the even simpler option is to change the brightness levels manually - on many laptops there are brightness keys (usually you need to press Fn + the key which looks like a small sun) to adjust it. :)
