Laptop screen replacement possible return

My Laptop screen recently broke and I went to get it repaired at a shop. While the work was being done I checked prices on the net for the screen replacement. I expected a price increase with it being a local retailer but the replacement part was only £37 online to buy and the place I got it from charges only £10-20 for labour charges. So at £47-57 we're talking nearly double the price. Any advice on how I can return this? It was only done two days ago, anybody got any ideas how I could make this swing?
Thanks for any replies in advance and if nobody can think of any ideas thanks for the time anyway

Nice first post, welcome to OCUK

You agreed to the service cost and left your laptop for repair, I don't see any reason the company will take it back other than good will.

should have posted on here, i could have told you where to go and also how much to pay or talked you through it, got some great vids, easy to do with no real skill needed, just a few basic tools tbh

You cannot. You agreed to the charges when you gave them the laptop and paid them the money. They have no obligation to refund you anything at all.

£10-£20 for labour charges? You're lucky, we charge £40 an hour at our place for home users. You agreed to the work, you can't just decide you aren't happy with the price and expect them to take the part (which they probably ordered in specifically for you) back!

It's possible the screen you've found isn't the exact model for your laptop, either that or they bought one in and then the price was reduced after.

Talk to them, they will value your custom, and possibly come to an understanding. As mentioned above, they don't need to refund you anything, but might to keep your future custom.

It's posts like this that reinforces the fact that providing support/repairs to home users can be a nightmare.

You agreed the price, don't cause problems for the original shop - they have done nothing wrong. I wouldn't consider the replacement price to be over the top - whilst it's not a particularly complex job, it can be time consuming depending on the model etc.

If someone is only charging £10 labour to do this sort of job, it's too cheap - and probably for a reason.

Unless the op is in there spending 000's all the tim, they will tell him very politely that thats the price that was agreed upon.

As for labour, that is very cheap. I charge £45 per hour for my lasers. Don't forget that you have to include wages and profit in that as well.

Screens can by tricky buggers, if you are used to doing them, then they can take half an hour to do carefully, else you are looking at at least an hour or so, then you have to test them.

It's very difficult to get "trade" prices on replacement panels, so you will find the shop is probably buying it at a similar price you are and then adding some profit on top. As someone stated above, if you are used to replacing them it doesn't long. Don't forget the warranty as well that comes with them replacing it.

Out of interest, where abouts are you located?

Depends where the OP and shop are, if it's a small community it's possible that he will value new customers and might listen to the OP and do a deal.

I have done this in the past and will do so in the future, if the shop is just starting out, he'll be thankful for the free word of mouth advertising. Even if they aren't starting out, it can't hurt to treat your customers well. True they might not spend loads there, but their friends and family might go there on the OP's recommendation, instead of the usual google it.

I also think the price quoted is a fair price and around the price I would've quoted, but the OP can always talk to them. The worse they can say is no, pay the price quoted.

A, learn from your mistake and just be glad the job was done right (if it was).

B, try and ask for some kind of refund but its not likely.

C, learn some skills and stop paying for these very manageable jobs doing.

Have you also considered the postage costs for sending off for repair as opposed to taking it to a local shop? Also the courier may cause more damage to your laptop or even lose it.

£85 is very reasonable for a laptop screen repair for a shop who have overheads unlike an online repair service.

Mate of mine paid a similar price to get his screen replaced a few months ago. Seems about right to me.

If you're not completely rubbish with your hands then it's approx a 30min job to do, once you've removed the lid it all makes sense. the most taxing part is that some laptops have tens and tens of screws to undo (and then lose!).

As above though, should have shopped around first!

Unless you have one of those fancy new Apple laptops where the screen is laminated to the glass and can't really be replaced.

Actually I've seen skilled repair people struggle with laptop screens. I'd pay somebody, especially at the bargain price of £83 - screen included. :D
