Laptop screen very dull..

My dads laptop screen is very dull, now I did say I could probably fix it but in the meantime the plonker has gone and got himself a new laptop from that purple place :rolleyes:

He's 69 years old so I can't really have a dig at him as he loves his internets.

However he's gifted me his Inspiron 1520 as it's "a brick" well no it's actually still a reasonably good gaming laptop so I'm keen to sort it for the missus

Screen flickers initially but not bright at all, then is incredibly faint, I can however just make out that the laptop is working, hits windows etc and makes all the good sounds but at all times it's very faint.

I've pulled the screen out and got the invertor part number (£4 off the bay) does it sound like this is probably the part that's away?

Try a replacement inverter as a first step.

If that doesn't fix it you'll probably need a new panel.

The brightness of a CCFL decreases quite quickly so its possible that has just worn out. Sometimes you can replace them but from what I've seen it is a lot of work.

Sadly not the invertor, just replaced it with one off the bay, exact same issue so looks like possible backlight.

Might end up just hooking up a monitor as it's unlikely to be moved around anyway!

sounds like a dying screen. you would probably need to replace the whole screen.

presumably when you plug it into an external monitor everything is fine and dandy?
