Laptop turns off when playing games...

.. but only if power adapter is connected.

Could the adapter suddenly just start giving out too much juice, therefore overheating it?

With the adapter plugged in playing for example Battle for Middle-earth 2 it lasts around 3 minutes, if that. Without it lasts until the battery dies.

Cheers

I would guess that the laptop has power saving enabled so it uses less power when running off the power therefore reducing the heat given off. Im also guessing that when its plugged in, the laptop runs as best it can producing more heat and thats why its overheating. Ive got an Acer laptop that runs fans on 24/7 but when its on battery, the fans dont run all of the time as there is less heat actually being given off.

Hope that helps mate - how old is the laptop? I reckon it could be overheating when running in games...

It turns it self off at around 44 degrees, but the cpu doesnt give off any heat. All the heat seems to be coming from where the power adapter plug is inserted into the laptop. I think its about 3 years old (its not mine)

I've just been playing around with a program called RM Clock. Earlier i used it to clock the cpu to 600mhz, well thats what it said in the program and also in Everest and was able to play for about half an hour at low fx settings. So i changed the settings to Ultra High, runs like a pig but hasn't shut down yet (about 30mins)

Does anyone know how to clean a cpu heatsink on a Compaq 7010nx??

does this laptop have a dedicated graphics card, if not can you turn down the video settings and resolution maybe this will help if it is overheating. as an electrician i know that any electronic equipment draws whatever power it needs from the power source and if your laptops only got internal graphics and not dedicated then your gpu may be drawing too much power from your mains adaptor and thus overheating. as i have said turn down the video settings on your games and at least see if you get a longer time to play. you should post the specs of your laptop as this would help us fix the problem.
