I was looking to upgrade the memory on my gf's laptop. Had a look on the back, and I can only find one physical slot with 256mb in it. Used CPU-Z to find out what speed it is and there are two slots selectable for information, with slot2 being empty. Is there a second slot lurking somewhere deeper, or is CPU-Z lying? (I don't see why it would)

there will be another slot on the motherboard. you will need to remove the keyboard to access it

what kind of laptop is it?

Agreed, a lot of laptop mobo's have one slot on top of the board and another underneath.

Model and make of laptop would help us to help you.

Some laptops even go as far as having some built onboard. However usually there is one below a flap on the base and one benief the keyboard.

aha, under the keyboard you say...

It's an advent..I think the model number is 706something, but it doesn't say anywhere on it strangely enough. All I can find is E12B. Do advent not actually have their own site?

Having looked at the keyboard I can't see any way of taking it off, guess I'll have to go in from the back? Is this likely to be problematic? I'm tempted to just start unscrewing stuff..

There will either be screws on the base for the keyboard, or the bit of plastic that runs between the screen and the keyboard (usually has the power switch on) Will be removable and the screws will be under there.
