hi guys,

having a few issues with my laptop. it starts slowing down after about 3hrs use to the point were i have to hold the power button just to turn it off (this cant to it any gud????)

i have a compaq nx6325
windows XP service pack 3
mobile AMD Sempron processor 3500+ 1.79GHz
1.37GB RAM

i have had this laptop for about 3 years now and its been a treat, dont really wanna part with it.

i am using a 'kingston universal 70W AC/DC Power adaptor. im mentioning this as when my original died on me i didnt want to spend £50+ on a new one. so bought the Kingston (over 12 months ago) and remeber a debate between the staff about the power rating of the Power adaptor being to small. but with a 15" screen he told me it would be fine.....what difference that makes i dont know.......so though i best mention that.

i have Kaspersky 2011 updated and all is fine there, defraged it, error check it (i always tick the 'attempt to recover bad sector' thing, (tick 2 boxes) is this correct?) and done a disk clean up.

thanks for any help

Regarding psu....does the laptop have any info on base regarding volts and amps it needs?

Regarding slowing down try malwarebytes and see if that finds anything. If not then i would go for a clean install after 3 years

edit: base will say 18.5v and 3.5A =64.75W so charger should be ok as genuine ones are only 65W :)

Can you find out the temperatures of the cpu, hard drive etc?

Because my laptop works ok for about half an hour and then the temperature steadily rises up to about 75c and i have to leave it turned off for a while.

thanks for the replies. 18.5V - 3.5A is correct, so the charger is ok? ive downloaded malwarebytes and its found 3 infected files at the mo, scanned about 50,000 and going on C: drive. is malwarebytes similar to spybot (wasnt keen on that) and why doesnt kaspersky find all this. is kaspersky nothing to do with Malware? just viruses and a firewall? so what do i do with the infected files...delete them entirley?

thanks

Yes delete anything it finds.
Similiar to spybot yes.
I use kaspersky as well and these find stuff thats not on its agenda to look for.

Do the cpu fan run fast all the time or after a while of use?
Also check in task manager and see what using up the cpu % (if anything)

cpu usage is changing all the time, it was 88% then droped all the way down to 44%. dont know how to find out temps and fan speed, but yes it does seem to run fast more often. and the heat seems to have increased from what i remember it being in previouse months. but then i could be getting paranoid.

Some program running when it shouldnt. At idle it should be under 5% approx.
What process is using the most %?

Clean install would be the best way to sort though.

from what i can see the process with the most % is the 'system idle process', keeps jumping from 85 to 99. then the odd thing at 02. processes currentley 49, commit charge 533M/1924M this all sound ok?

also my malware scan finished (1 hr 20 mins) but the comp went to slow and unresponsive i had to hold the power button to turn it off again! so couldnt save the log but did write it down:

File - c:\WINDOWS/system32\antiwpa.dll

Registry Key - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\Antiwpa

Memory module - c:\WINDOWS/system32\antiwpa.dll

All above under 'Vendor' it says PUP.Wpakill on all of them

can you guys lend a hand again, thanks

also i have Acronics loader (F11 on startup) that recovers it to about a year ago but dont really want to lose a years worth of stuff.

Is it a legit copy of xp?
antiwpa was the name of a program used to bypass wpa(windows product activation)

Cant discuss any further if thats the case...forum rules :(

oh yi m8 its legit.

i had a reinstall about 18ish months ago, and since then everytime i boot up it come up with a message to autenticate/activate windows copy. after trying this time after time, the guy who carried out the work contacted microsoft directley to resolve the issue with no luck. totaly legit m8, dont do all that stuff especially with comps....to many things could go wrong lol.
