The sound from them went down to a whisper…headphones plugged in is fine. Took the cover off and plugged in speakers from an old laptop to the mb/sound card?…they work fine so it looks like replacing the speakers is the solution. But is there anything else to check for? What could have caused them to stop working in the first place?

If they are active speakers and the power supply has died that would explain a very low output level, might be worth getting a meter on the power plug to see if that is the problem. Ignore this, just read that it is a laptop.

Yeah it's 100% the speakers...tested by plugging other speakers from an old Dell laptop in..like inside the laptop on the mobo,.was surprised/ glad they still use the same connector!
It's just I can't see any replacement speakers for sale, just used which makes me think it's not too common for them to break/need replaced
