Laptop Spec:

Hi all,
Was wondering if I could get some help with finding a laptop that meets my needs? Basically I'm buying a laptop for uni work, and a separate desktop for gaming. The laptop needs to be able to run your standard operations like web, email, music, video etc. as well as carry out programming in formats like MatLab and C without taking an eternity. I'd prefer it to be running Vista so I'm guessing 2gb RAM is a minimum and also to have a fair battery life, but I'm not really sure what else it needs... I'd like to be spending around £500 ish inc. VAT on this. Also on a sidenote, is there a considerable difference between Core Duo and Core Duo 2?

That's only on 1GB RAM and although I'm still not sure on the difference in performance, it's not C2D so I'm not all that keen as from what I understand it's not going to run Vista all that well.

I found this for £500 + £25 next day delivery

Only problem is it has XP Pro.. couldnt seem to find anything with vista for the same price :/

That's a good thing, fomr all I've heard Vista slows laptops down, and to be honest, XP Pro is better than Vista anyways.

I'm suprised you've found it with XP though, as most places only ship stuff with Vista thesedays, all laptops/prebuild PCs come with it, and it's rather annoying.

EDIT: You can pick Vista up from the MSDNAA scheme your uni runs, it's course dependaint if you can have it, but if you are doing such things as programming you will be able to get it.

I have access to all MS OSes, free of charge. Win98 through Vista Businesss 64bit.

Really? Didn't know about that, I'll see if I can find out about that. I'm doing physics not computer science tho, so not sure if they'll be so keen

They should be ok with it, main thing to do is check with the course leaders about it, just ask if the uni has MSDNAA (most do), and find where the forms are, fill one out, and get your free stuff.
