Laptop stalls after XP login, help!

Hi,

My GF bought a 2nd hand Sony X505 laptop from an auction site recently. Came pre-installed with XP. Had been working fine up to now, but since last night it won't login to windows.

You get to the login screen where you enter username / password. Once the details have been entered and you press OK it just hangs on the "Loading personal settings" screen

Anyone know how to fix this?

Do you have another account on the machine that is an admin.

Try logging in as that and removing the c:\documents and settings\gf's login\ folder.

It sounds like her profile is a little corrupt.

If you dont have another user to use, then try it in safe mode and log in as her then create a new admin user, log out as her, go back in as the admin and try remove that folder.

Edit: dont delete the folder, just move it so you can get the files out of there that you need.
