Laptop stuck in restart loop after windows 10 update

Hi All,

I updated my old Dell XPS laptop to windows 10 (via download) the other day and now it wont start to desktop, it remains in a loop with a black screen that says "Diagnosing your PC" and a white dotted circle, or sometimes it'll get stuck on a blue screen with a saying " Your PC ran into a problem ... driver_irql_not_less_or_equal storahci.sys".

Apparently this is a common problem, however I can't figure out how to get out of it.

Not sure if i properly checked the requirements, but it popped up that I could download windows 10 for free so I just assumed it was all good.

I did see the desktop yes, straight after the install. But then after I shut it down, it did this. If I boot from a USB and reinstall windows, will that wipe my HD as I have stuff on there that isn't backed up?

No, I don't have an ESET AV installed.

Ok thanks. How would I go about connecting the HDD to another PC? Is it simply a case of buying an adapter cable and just plugging it into a PC, with something like this:

and actually how would the HDD be powered?
