laptop stuttering!!! :@

hey, got a pretty newish laptop (bought in march), however it is getting really sluggish, when I type there is sometimes a lag, then the text appearing. It is also pretty slow on start up also. Below is specs and what I've done as general computer mantainance!

Laptop:

Acer 5740G
i5 430M
4GB RAM
ATI 5470 mobility
500GB HDD
Windows 7 HP

so far, i've regularly cleaned with ccleaner, have avast antivirus, defragged, cleaned the disk using disk clean up, OS is fully upto date. Yet it is still running slow!!! This is beginning to annoy me, any suggestions??

open task manager/processes and see if there is a rogue program using a high CPU %

could be your hard disk - find out manufacturer - bios a good start - then go to their web site and download their proprietary HDD testing software.
