Laptop Suddenly Died

I was using my laptop at the weekend and it suddenly crashed, restarted and tried to boot in safe mode. At this point I was going to turn it off anyway, so just powered it down. When I tried to use it the next day, it wouldn't boot.

The laptop in question: Dell Studio 1558

What happens is:

  • Press Power Button: light shows and also registers the powerpack being plugged in (by showing the little light above the power)
  • CD/DVD drive makes a small noise as though it's turning on
  • NO fans engage: it's practically silent when switched on
  • Doesn't boot and the display doesn't show anything
  • When you press the power button just once, it instantly turns off (normally you'd have to hold it down for a few seconds like normal)

It's had battery and overheating issues before, but it's never restarted itself. I've also tried the power reset and the reseat memory fix, but still no luck.

I'm inclined to think either the heatsink fan has died, hence why it might not power up or the motherboard has completely failed.

Any ideas on how I can diagnose this further or what the cause is?

Thanks

it either dead ram or hdd id say , try removing the hdd and see if you get into bios , if that fails try different ram or if you 2 sticks try 1 at a time ,

It was one of the RAM sticks. The 2GB module has failed by the looks of it as I can post into windows using just the 1GB in both slots.

Thanks for the help mate
