Hi,

I am going to university soon and taking a new laptop.

Has anybody found any good free or low cost software for theft situations? My ideal software would activate when an unknown wifi access point is accessed, take webcam pictures, keylog and geolocate etc.

I would be interested in anything like this.

Thanks

If it's an Intel chip that's been made in the last year or so (i.e. supports AES hardware acceleration) then truecrypt is the obvious choice. Install and it'll tell if it does. If it does, enable full drive encryption.

There is software to do what you want but not free or low cost. Besides, key-logging the wrong thing could actually create problems for you if recovered. Most of the time though the drive would just be removed, laptop moved on asap and teh drive mined for personal data - and we're back to encryption.

Truecrypt the hard drive as said above. On my netbook the drive is encrypted so no one can get any information from it if it's stolen, because realistically you probably wont get it back.
