Hi guys and girls, I am having some problems with my DELL laptop. Its running Windows Vista 32 bit edition and I simply cannot connect to the internet. I could successfully ping google from command prompt but can't receive windows updates. When I install Norton it doesn't run nor does it appear in the task bar (bottom right).

Any ideas on what I could do? I am definately connected as I tried both wirelessly and ethernet and I could ping google :)

this should probably go in the network/internet part.
has it worked before?
checked for spyware?
what browsers are you using/tried? (check its not using a proxy)

1.. Scan for malware

2.. Goto control panel and then Internet options. Have a look at the connections tab and make sure the proxy connection is not ticked. If it is untick.

3.. Run a ping test. Open up a command prompt (start run cmd and right click cmd and select run as administrator) and type ping www.google.co.uk. See if there is any packet loss.

4.. Restart router / modem

Try these.

A quick fix that is more than likely to work would be:

Start -> Control panel -> network and sharing centre and disbale and then re-enable all of your network adaptors

Also, check in device manager to see if each of the adapters are correctly installed, and check to see if any driver updates are available

Hi guys thanks for the replies much appreciated :) I have tried the following:

- Device manager shows everything is fine (no exclamation points)
- I was hoping installing Norton would allow me to scan but Norton fails to boot :(
- Ping is successful to Google (no packet loss)

I'll have a look at connections tab check if its using a proxy. Don't think it should but I'll do that and report back :)

Thanks all!
