Laptop Turning Off

Hi all.

I have an old Toshiba laptop that im trying to sort out.
If I have the battery removed, and plugged into the mains, the laptop works fine.
If I have the battery plugged in, and the power adapter connected, the laptop will turn on for 10 seconds and turn off before its able to boot up into windows.
If I have the battery removed, have the power plugged in and then switch on and boot into windows, then push the battery in while the laptop is powered up, within 30 seconds the laptop will turn off.

I'm currently seeing if the battery will charge, just leaving it plugged in and will see what will happen.

But does this sound like a faulty battery, or faulty charging circuit?
The laptop is a Toshiba C660 if that helps.

Thanks in advanced!

Edit: I have had the laptop plugged in to charge and the battery percentage has increased slowly, I had to check this first by removing the battery and then plugging it in when the laptop was powered up.
But even with some charge, the laptop powers off.

given the laptop is over 10years old.
miost likely the battery is just dead.
you see it with the older machines more if the battery isnt working properly the machine will not work correctly or power on at all.

based one what you did its a fair assessment its the battery. probably not worth replacing the battery unless your looking to use a linux install on it. its a windows 7 machine originally looking at the details.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I think you're right.
Yesterday the battery was showing 5% charge, then when I had it off but plugged in to charge it was showing 12%, then ive left it on all day today to charge, and i booted it into windows, it was showing 0% charge, then 2 mins until full charge.
I pulled the plug out and then the laptop powered off, so yeah looks like it was the battery.

Its an old laptop, but i installed an old ssd in there and a clean install of windows 10, was hoping to give it a new lease of life and sell it to someone who would need it, would be a shame for it to go to waste.

Cheers

I literally have the same issue with one of my old laptops, around 10 years old now and battery is kaput, even with a 100% charged battery, sometimes it may work for an hour, sometimes it'll randomly turn off after 30 mins even with 70% battery remaining. Cant even get a spare battery for it anymore but it does run well with a SSD and fresh install of windows.
