Hi,

I have been a DIY computer guy for as far as pentium 1 and I am quite competent in building a PC from scratch.

I was given this laptop for free from a friend.

Toshiba satellite with PIII697mhz and 128Mb ram. I have installed a cut down version of WindowXP with nLite and I am using it as my wireless internet terminal at home and at work.

Is it easy to buy some second hand parts to replace and upgrade this machine?

The battery is not holding charge, it is worth to get another battery and replace it?

I was never into laptop stuff so I am not sure what type of ram or cup I need :(

Many thanks

Are you going to be moving the laptop around? If not I probably wouldn't bother buying a new battery and in fact would remove the current one as it will just be generating heat for no real purpose.

The only things you are likely to be able to upgrade internally are the hard drive and Ram, both of which are usually fairly simple to do. I'd probably try to go for at least 256mb Ram but check what type the laptop takes of course and also make sure you can get access/what slots are filled already.

cheers,

I have a play around with the laptop and screw drivers. You are right, the ram and hard disk is easily accessible.

It says PC133 on the label so I guess that the frequency it runs at, how about no. of pins? some are 144? 200?
I need to know which one to buy.

Would be 144 pins.

You might find the CPU is possible to swap if you can find a simalar one used. Might not actualy be worth it though best you might manage is 1ghz.
