Can I advise people to take care when downloading this weeks updates for Vista, especially Laptop owners.

One of the updates is for anyone with a Radeon Mobility graphics card. If you download this particular patch my advice would be to create a "restore point" before you do. See thread I started yesterday http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17850429 Having read other forums other users are having similar issues especially with though not exclusively the X300 Ati card.

The flicker with IE7 that I was experiencing was awful, every roll of the mouse would cause instability and another function that I lost was the search function on one particular forum, clicking search achieved nothing as the dialogue box wouldn't open.

Went to system restore and restored to pre-updates and everything now back to normal.

i never let windows update take care of hardware drivers like drivers for gfx cards etc, always prefer to go through ati or the manufacturer for this.

I did go to the ATi website where there are two downloads, one is the complete Catalyst Centre and one smaller file, well I say smaller it's 21meg are the latest drivers. I did install these but it made not one tat worth of difference. Obviously whatever MS had downloaded for the GFX card had really messed things up. I may try installing the driver pack again now system is back as it was and see what happens. I just hope they don't include this patch in the soon to be released SP1?

Footnote to this thread - I have downloaded the latest drivers direct from the ATi website installed them and all seems OK, no problems with IE7 this time. It would appear then that the MS ATi patch via the weekly Vista update was the problem so beware anyone who has yet to receive the updates and uses the Radeon Mobility GFX cards.

Footnote to the footnote  I re-selected the MS ATi Vista update for the X300 and installed again - result? exactly same issue so it's definitely the patch that is causing the problem. Rolled Vista back again to restore point and no problems. How do you notify MS that their update is faulty and causing a problem, is there some sort of reporting structure in place?
