Hi, my mates got a laptop which has been acting very strange ever since he uninstalled Nortan Anti-Virus which we all know is bollacks **** and a number of other things. Anyway he'll turn the laptop on and it will take about an hour to boot and then will switch onto a blue screen after about 10-15mins could this be a virus. He wants me to look into because it will cost him £140 on RMA. Thanks

Have you tried running the speacil Norton Removal Tool?

If you are getting a blue screen it is normally a hardware/driver issue. Check all the drivers are up to date, if this solves it, run a Ccleaner and a defrag progream.
if it doesnt run a memtest.

Might just be easier to reinstall the OS if its a software problem.

^this.
Copy data to an external drive (manually, dont just image the drive), and reinstall the os.

Otherwise, boot it from a linux livecd and see if it still misbehaves, linux should be basically immune to virus attack and certainly wont be attacked from his hard drive. Probably ubuntu, it looks a bit alien but just choose the top option on the menu and wait for a bit for the desktop to come up. If its a virus, it'll be fine. If the hardware is buggered, itll do the same as windows

Ubuntu live CD is a good idea, see if its slowed down at all or plays up.

Chances are reinstalling the Windows will fix it, of course you'll need to get his docs off it. This can be done in the live CD as well.
