By brother has just bought a Haswell i7 laptop with 8GB of ram and a ssd/hd disk setup. Pretty top of the line stuff.

I run lightroom a lot and really like the idea of moving away from my desktop.

So last weekend we ran a set of tests on the same set of images. In each case my desktop was faster sometime by a factor of 2.

Now my desktop is 'only' an i5 with 8Gb and a SSD system drive.

So in theory the laptop should have smoked it.

Any ideas why ? Are laptop chipsets still slower than desktop equivalents like they always were ?
 
Would need to know more about the specs really to know why one was faster than the other.

Laptops aren't slow but some desktop processing type benchmarks can hit RAM or buses hard that might not be quite as upto it as a high end desktop system. RAM in a laptop tends to be fairly slow for a mainstream laptop and even high end ones tend to use fairly average timings compared to a comparable desktop system.

The CPU in my laptop is roughly equivalent to an i7 920 and only just behind the desktop 2600k for overall benchmarks so definitely not slow.
 
Laptop chips are different, so is the RAM.. The main reason is power..

Theres a limited amount of power that can be supplied to/taken from the laptops battery, so the CPU will need a lower power rating and will be lower clocked to ensure little juice is being used.

Memory is also the Same, the speed and timings will be much worse than it's desktop equivalent..

It's impossible to put 'desktop grade' components in a laptop for that reason alone.

You'll notice his CPU will be i7 ***M (mobile).. Thats the give away. :)
 
I suppose bottom line is my desktop has unrestricted airflow and a CPU cooler the size of a melon. Laptop has a slot on the back the size of a matchbox....
 
My old i5 750 smokes my new (ish, ivy) i7-based laptop.... laptop gets too hot if I clock it up, desktop doesn't. Annoying, but there is a reason desktops still exist.

Edit: In some tasks the laptop does edge the desktop, just not very many. :(
