Hey guys,

I don't know the story of the problem fully but from what I've been told basically the battery went dead and then when the laptop was powered up again it had a clean install of windows on.

All the data from it has gone and it shows the hard drive in my computer as 35gb with 30gb free which is right for a 40gb HDD with an install of windows and other JVC stuff.

What could have happened?

Thanks
Jonny

Okay another thing, it had a 2gb USB stick plugged into it at the time and that has been wiped as well so theres nothing left at all. It's my girlfriends dads laptop and its a JVC mini note MP-XP731.

Thanks for any help offered.

It may have booted from the wrong partition, I'll bet it keeps a 2nd partition for recovery purposes. It sounds like the bios battery is flat, so when the laptop batter went flat it forgot its bios settings and so may be booting from the wrong partition. Try going into bios and changing the boot priority

Okay I tried it and it won't let me enter the bios fully, I hit F2 and it changes from the JVC flash screen to the normal boot screen, and it says entering setup, after that though it just loads straight into windows skipping the bios. I tried also hitting F6 (I think it was) and the boot menu came up and it was a choice of removeable, hdd or cd drive. I tried them all and nothing worked.
