Laptop With External Moniter

One of my friend ask me to switch between Laptop LCD and external monitor but on that time i was out of an answer and this is how i just get that and here i need to know that how to connect an external monitor with laptop so one can see the output of laptop in an external monitor, does it require any special cable or connectors? Thanks in advance

No special cables the lappy will have a port, dsub or dvi, if it suppoerts an external monitor

then you have to select it to output using it - using what ever function keycombo the model usues.
