Hi OcUK,

My girlfriends laptop (Vista) seems to be having some problems with it, it boots (After a chkdsk, every single time) it slowly logs in and then when it does come to logging it it shows up with errors of avast antivirus not being fully running and things like iTunes helper coming up with errors of not being able to run.

The Hard Drive seems to be making strange noises at times, I think it might just be failing. Any programs I can use to check this is the case?

The only issue there is that I can't keep the PC going long enough to install + use the program, sometimes Safe Mode loads, sometimes it doesn't and it just get stuck and then restarts itself.

The disc is a Hitachi.

Is it possible to do a fresh install just in case the current version is corrupt.

I was thinking of doing that, but really didn't want the hassle of reinstalling, was hoping for a better way :P

If I upgrade from Vista to W7 any chance that will fix my problems + leave me with a PC with all the programs still on it.

Another thought, Is the drive IDE or SATA, wondering if it is possible to connect to your main pc and test through that and you could hopefully transfer your data.

I have done in the past.

Drive is SATA, but I'm hoping that I don't need to connect it to my PC just in case it is a virus that has caused the issues

Get that data backed up as soon as possible :(

HDDRegen can find and even fix errors but normally if it finds errors i just replace the drive as its very likely its on its way out.

There is a trial version of it that will find all bad sectors but only fix the first couple or so.

Have had drives with 3000 errors that were fixed and drive ran fine after that but have also had ones with only a few errors that continued to develop more errors within days of repair.

If its making funny noises then i would say replace it.

Right guys, looks like I got to half way of the drive, 30% damaged.

Now, I want to back it up but I'm just getting stuck possibly because of those bad sectors, what would be the recommended course of action for backing up the drive, what'd be the best program?

HDD Regen can sort the bad sectors out.
Doing a drive just now that went from unreadable at all to being able to recover 50gigs after hdd regen did its magic :)

Email in trust for more info :)
