I have a friends IBM thinkpad at the moment. She has asked me to have a look at it because she thinks it has been turning off due to heat problems. I don’t have the spec to hand but it’s pretty modern, I would say 2 years old max. It’s a powerful one running windows xp.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any could utilities to test for hardware problems, a basic diagnostics program would do the job.

Also if it is overheating any ideas on that or tips? All the fans seem to be working, I’m going to stress test it at some stage with prime95.

Cheers Jim

id just get a temp monitor proggy on it and keep an eye on the temps while you do a stress test.

not sure about diagnostic proggys though? maybe try sisoft sandra?? seem to remember this might have somethin in that you could use??

for temp monitoring theres a few you could try

speedfan is supposed to be one of the best (what a lot of people on here use)

theres MBM (motherboard monitor)

Hardware Sensor Monitor is pretty good, I used to use that

think sisoft sandra actually measures temps too thinkin about it??

Why not tell her to get the lap2cool;
Vantec LapCool 2 Notebook Cooler (LPC-305) (HS-002-VA)
Price: £24.95 (£29.32 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Not in stock ATM but that would sort out the heat ?

If its heat related, dust is the usual culprit. Carefully blow air back into the normal air outlet vent and see if that helps.

I had a temperature issue with my laptop a while back. I took the panel covering off and found a length of compacted fluff between the fan and the heat sink. Removed it and voila!
