Wasn't sure which forum to put this but pretty certain it is a hardware problem.

My girlfriend has a Toshiba Satellite laptop which all of a sudden is giving her an error and wont start-up, the error is

"Windows has encounter a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.

Tis error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer

If yo continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer.

File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred. "

It allows us to choose two options, start windows normally or startup repair mode I think? Anyway neither work, it just comes to that error or hangs.

I have tried putting in my Windows 7 CD but it sounds like it is loading then I get a cursor on a blank screen and nothing else happens - I can move the cursor but no disc reading or loading is happening. Tried the same with an old Ubuntu disc I had and the graphics went screwy and it hung too.

In the BIOS it seems to recognise the HDD.

I have googled this a bit but most seem to be solved by putting in the Windows 7 disc so I am thinking it is more some HDD controller might be broke?

Can anyone recommend any next steps I could try? She is thinking of getting a new laptop, I think I will probably take the HDD out and backup her stuff but is the laptop a write-off?

Hello

Not sure if you still need help.
I would suggest removing the cmos battery in order to reset the bios. I've seen this on a laptop I was fixing before. Funnily enough it was on a Toshiba. You should be able to get into it quite easy as I believe it's seated just behind the hard-drive.

Does sound like hardware issue to be fair. but can try the below for good measure

on bootup tap f8 repeatidly until you have advanced boot menu

when on advanced boot menu click, repair my computer (should be top option)

when this loads you might need to enter admin user / pass

then will be presented with a menu. can try 3 things form here. startup repair. sys restore or what i would do is open p the cmd prompt

type

chkdsk c: /f /r

then when thats done type

sfc /scannow

when both finished reboot and see what happens.
