Laptop wont connect

Hi guys, i've just moved into my new student house, i've been trying to connect a mates laptop to the router but it doesn't seem to want to.
I connected mine and 2 others to the router (by wireless) but this one doesn't seem to want to. It has an in-built wireless card but can't find any networks.
It doesn't even find the networks of the nearby houses, let alone my router.
can anyone help?
i might be doing something obviously wrong!

Are you sure wireless is enabled? I know it might sound daft but most laptops can disable it in the bios or with key controls (function + F2 or a side switch on most dells.)
