Laptop wont post...

HAd a laptop in my shed. But my god it was slow. Opened it up to find 512MB of ram. OK....I can upgrade that. What about the cpu? Opened it up further. OK 2Ghz. not too bad actually. Put it back together...wont post.
Service light come on, I hear the hardrive spinning for about 5 seconds then it shuts down.

Does it beep at all or does it just power up then power off?

Try removing the battery and while it is connected to the mains try powering it on? If that works, you've got a gubbed battery.
