Help, Laptop won’t power up

Have been given a friends laptop to repair (Asus X51L), as it was running very slow due to virus scans running & to many programs running & having not been defragged in a long time.

When I went to collect it from my friend, I powered it up to see what was wrong with it & it was only running on battery as it seamed there was a fault with the power adapter that was plugged in.

The laptop died as it had run out of power, I then tried on of my adapters & it powered up for around 15 minutes & then the screen flickered continuously so I removed the ac adapter & then the machine switched itself off.

On battery the machine turns on for two seconds & the Zz light is on & the machine dies.

I will see if my friend has found his spare power adapter tonight, & hope that it powers up ok.

Tried friends spare power adapter & laptop still does not switch on.

The battery light stays on all the time now even without mains adapter plugged in.

Is this a problem with the DC POWER JACK PORT SOCKET on the back of the laptop, or is the motherboard needing replaced.

I know that I can fix the laptop dc power port socket with a replacement for £2, just need to know if this is indeed the problem.

Any help would be grate,

Thanks.

This happened to me twice in the past few years, its the battery mate. Its dead, you'v just confirmed it after trying your friends power adapter. You need to get the battery replaced somehow, its possible and its not too expensive either.
What causes this problem you may ask? I found it to be - Using the laptop on the bed whilst laying back, generally stretching the cable or having it in an unusual position somehow seems to kill the battery as well as the power cable.

Anyway, thats what I think, I may be wrong.

ok ... u used a another laptop adaptor ??? chance are u blown the power stage not every laptop is same voltage or amage ...... it will work with the battry cos it switchs over to it ...... yur probly looking at a new main board .... or another laptop to charge the battery ...... get the prober power adpator made by asus and plug it in see if it charges .... if not u blown it ....

The power supply i used had a voltage changer on it & I set it to the correct setting.

The laptop was having problems booting after my friends power adapter had died, so don't think it was anything that I did after that. It did not stay on very long with my adapter & then died like it did with his adapter.

Tried his spare but still won't boot.
