Hey peeps,

The GF's laptop has been acting very strangely so I was hoping someone might be able to help out...
(I don't know anything about laptops :P)

At first it was just running very slowly - I got her to back everything up and clear out as much unneccessaryprograms etc as possible and scan everything - which she did and it seemed to help a little.

However:
For the last few weeks it has on occasion, and more frequently to a point of permanence now, when it is powered up it simply won't do anything.

The power, HDD lights etc are on and the fans are going, the power switch glows... but zip happens. At first we left it thinking it was slow but after several attempts and leaving it for up to an hour nothing happens.

When starting it up again most recently it said that it hadn't shut down properly and gave the option to start in safe mode, so we did.

In safe mode it loaded up fine.

Now - I went straight into the 'Startup' folder (windows Vista) which I'd heard listed programs that start on power-up and could cause a problem - only to find it Empty! Is that normal?

I didn't know what else to do - so we shut it down again.

Any siggestions would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

When you say it won't do anything is the laptop posting ok, but just not booting into windows? It would suggest a likely hdd failure, i would run a program like drive fitness that you can find on ultimate boot cd .
